This morning App State coach Jerry Moore held a conference call dedicated to talking about the All-Time Upset. The first of what will be too many columns on the topic is now online. Nostalgia is always fun, but we’ve long agreed with the Wolverine Killer – “It kind of gets annoying.” It was a monumental game, but we got two words for ya – Beat ECU.
Bout time! Beat ECU!
I have to agree with AE. The ATU is getting old. Heck, it's been old for a while now. The ATU would be much sweeter, IMO, if we wouldn't have gotten our a$$ handed to us by other fbs teams (excluding ECU). If we could have held our own or have shown some what of a fighting chance against the other fbs opponents, our win over Mighigan would have, and maybe still have, a better "feel" to it. I'm just sick and tired of people saying our win was a fluke. UM had plenty of opportunities to win (and App had some opportunities slip thru their hands that could have made the outcome/final score different). Yes, we beat Michigan, and it was a great game…and hats off to those players who made it happen. They deserve all the praise and appreciation. But, until we can beat another team (even ECU) our victory doesn't hold much water like it once did. Now, with all that said…go kick some ECU Pirate a$$!!!
Well it did change the Big Ten if not college football. I mean look who Michigan and now Ohio State hired as coaches. Spread Offense Guru's. Just think about the offers that Jerry Moore must have gotten.
Besides being the ATU it was also one of the most thrilling rollercoaster rides of a football game I've ever witnessed. That said, it has been discussed enough and I would prefer another FCS National Championship to talk about as well as bragging rights over the Pirates to the East.
Go Apps!
Agreed, it's time to move on, put the UofM game on the shelf and not toalk further until we have too come 2014 when the Apps venture back to the Big House. ESPN and other media outlets will likely not let that happen however, because they will need the ATU to remain on fans minds in order to pump up the ratings for the rematch.
In my experience of watching sports of all kinds, any time a team or player spends too much time (and I think App is) looking back, the immediate future suffers. No doubt Moore is a great coach and he's made it clear he's well aware of the shortcomings of last year's team and I believe he's doing what he can to build a better TEAM this year, but this ATU crap needs to take a back seat to ECU and winning the SocCon and another Championship.
Getting blown out by LSU, even VaTech is one thing, but if I have to suffer through 100+ degree Greenville heat among a bunch of people that sh** Petey Purple to witness blowout to an unranked FBS team, well that's just unacceptable.
Yes I have tickets and will be there, tailgating starts at 8:00am!
I would rather beat ECU this year than beat UM in 2014, honestly.
I say let's live it up and keep enjoying it. That win was a magical moment in time that I never want to forget. I was there, and I for one don't want to take anything away from the kids and coaches who accomplished it.
That said, we should all stop hanging our hats on it, using it as a measurement for how good a program we have now. Lots of teams have big wins. I wish I could say I agree with Jerry's assessment of Michigan's desire to play us again, but we all know they're not inviting us back for the pure competition. They're doing so to ease their pain and even the all time record.
Beat ECU
No doubt about it ECU as a statement game. If we can go into hostile territory and take down ECU, it helps to build on our credibility about our move to FBS.
Everything I am hearing is that our past few years of recruiting are about to pay off big time the next few seasons. In the areas to which we need to be competitive at the next level, we now have solid depth at o line and d line. I hope the new coaches can help to build on the young talent we have now. We could see an interesting matchup the next time around in Ann Arbor. While I know they want revenge, we may just have the talent and talented depth in place again to give them a run for their money.
Agreed. The ATU was one of the greatest days ever, and will always be. But enough is enough already. We need to focus on ECU, improving from last year, and getting back to playing App football.
Got my tix for the ECU game and can't wait! Leaving Raleigh at 6:30am. This is a statement game. GO APPS!!
BEAT ECU!!
Going down on Friday and breaking into the lot at 7:30am for tailgating!!
