NFL – Cadet back in the spotlight

Who dat given em hell?Weapon X got plenty of love after the Saints first preseason game. Tonight they’re at home against Jacksonville – “The absence of Sproles opens the door a little wider for rookie RB Travaris Cadet .. (who) must prove not only his value as a pass catcher, but as a between the tackles runner as well.” Also tonight, Panthers at home against the Dolphins. Hopefully this time our neighbors won’t call the cops due to loud howls of pain (we’ll get our Tarkanian on instead). Gotta give ‘em hell, AE. Time running out.

HUGS. Great night for Cadet – 3 carries for 28 yards, 5 catches for 62 yards, a 24-yard TD reception, and one big embrace.

So happy for him

Is the Saints game on tv? Can't stand to watch the Panthers

  • MIDWEST

Nice return and reception by cadet

  • App88

    Not looking good for AE.

  • HOGAN

I've never felt so sad watching AE on the field…

HE'S A QUARTERBACK YOU SICK SON OF A B'S!!!!! DAMN YOU!!!! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!!!

God I can't wait to see him throwing the ball for the Argos or Alouettes.

  • MIDWEST

    It's over for AE. Sad.

    Cadet doing well.

  • MIDWEST

AE is 2 for 24 yards!

  • Plus AE drew an interference penalty prior to the two catches. He played in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs which was nice to see! He also had a very nice catch and punt return at the end of the 1st half. Good night for AE

  • JMcCray

I think AE should definitely go the Doug Flutie route! As an aside, I thought App Nation had a pretty respectable showing at the women's soccer match in Clemson!

  • AppDawg

How about another strong showing by Cadet! Over 200 yds receiving on 18 catches and 2 TDs in 3 games combined. The Saints are giving him many opportunities and he is proving himself.

The Panthers organization needs to take some notes…

I saw a little of the Panthers game. He had two meaningul catches and lots of playing time. I think this means Armanti will most likely be with the Panthers. His technique is improving and he has good hands and did a tremendous job blocking. He made numerous blocks. From QB in college to wide receiver in the NFL is a huge accomplishment. It is amazing that our school, with fewer scholarships than FBS schools, is sending so many guys to the NFL.

  • Gwaltineer

Those guys get about $5K per week on the practice squad. That's why they don't go Canadian unless they have to.

  • JD

I missed the Panther's game last night. Bottom line question to those who did watch the game, did AE help himself?

  • Mountlenoir

I think AE actually did pretty well. One missed pass that was low and and to the side. 2 completions, even mixed it up a little while blocking.

  • HOGAN

I watched the whole game. I thought AE did well, but outside of one or two series with Anderson, he spent the entirety of the evening in the third team with Jimmy Pickles Clausen. It is apparent that the panthers are giving more looks to Arijotutu and Louis Murphy. While "tutu" is garbage, Murphy looks strong right now and his play hurt AE more than anything. I don't think there enough slots for AE to fit in….

    #1 smith

    #2 lafell

    #3 gettis

I dunno, AE played an ok game. He missed an opportunity for a big catch that was a little in front of him, but quite frankly at this point, he's gotta go Allstar and make that grab if he wants to be in the NFL. He did "look" more like a WR then ever. Just his body language, how he ran routes and lined up.

    That's all I've got.

Cadet was under-used during his time at App. I wish him the best in the NFL and it looks like he's off to a good start and heading in the right direction.

  • scott

AE held his own last night, but I don't think there's room and The Wildcat has no purpose with Cam in the huddle and DeAngelo capable of running it. While he's be a good #3 in place of Clausen, he's be a much better fit with the Dolphins who need receivers and could use him in the Wildcat.

I'd love to see them cut him, if he could land in a better fit/situation. Great job by Cadet. He could fit a Reggie Bush role in Orleans.

Armanti was targeted five times. The first one was in the first half with Anderson at QB. There appeared to be some miscommunication on the play, as the ball arrived just as Armanti was turning around, and well off to his side. In the second half he was targeted on a short route across the middle but the pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage. Then he caught two in a row, both from Clausen and both for first downs. The last pass to come his way was down the left sideline but well out of bounds (he made a diving catch anyway). The defender was flagged for interference even though the ball was clearly uncatchable.

He fielded three punts cleanly, even though two of them were low, short line drives that he had to catch on a dead run right into oncoming defenders. He got three yards on one, and only one yard on the other. The last was a fair catch (great hang time, unblocked defender bearing down).

So far he's done all he could do to make the team, but with the coaches apparent fixation on Ajirotutu (who is not playing well at all) there will probably not be enough room on the squad for him. On the other hand, Gettis still hasn't played a down, in a game or in practice, and could wind up on the PUP to start the season. Someone else could get hurt. They'll keep six WRs for sure, and possibly a seventh depending on how co didn't they feel about their depth at a few other positions. I think that at this point Armanti's shown that he can play this game, and if the Panthers cut him loose he stands a good chance of landing with another team.

  • bcoach

    1. We can't keep blaming the coaches for what happens to AE. He has been given chances to show what he can do.

    2. AE is not an NFL QB or he would get that number 3 chance with the Panthers because Clausen sure isn't showing he is an NFL QB.

    3. It would be good to get to another team that can develop anothe WR OR

    4. Go to the CFL for a few years and then use that degree. He is a pretty smart guy.

    5. No matter what happens to him he is in the worst place he could possibly be right now, he need to get farther away from us.

Based on playing time, the wrs that will prob make the team are smith, lafell, murphy, pilares, adams, and tutu. Thats 6 spots taken and I'm not including gettis. Best case scenario for AE is that Gettis begins the season on the pup list and is not taking up another roster spot. Of course this could change. AE could replace tutu on that list, but tutu would be the only one. They wont cut any of the other 5.

Video of the Cadet TD for those who missed it.

  • Carbine

He ought to replace Tutu. I can't understand what the coaches see in him. Armanti hasn't set the world on fire, but he's already better than Tutu and will only improve with experience. Tutu has been a receiver all his life; he ain't getting any better.

  • AppInExile

Have you heard the latest from Dexter Jackson? I'm sure you haven't and I'll tell you why.

HE DIDN'T MAKE IT IN THE LEAGUE AND NOBODY CARES.

Why do I bring this up? Because AE has had plenty of chances to show what he can do. He's probably not going to make the roster and frankly he doesn't deserve to make it. They need to let him go so he can get the heck away from NC and go to a team where he can make a name for himself in the League.

We need to stop talking about AE and lamenting why he isn't making more of an impact. Let's focus on players that ARE making an impact in the NFL. Jeez, isn't this the same thread that was on AppFan last fall? Cut and pasted?

  • Appthunder90

This thread actually is about someone making an impact in the league. It's about Cadet. Maybe you shoul have read it first

  • Rekdiver

Cadet is really performing and will stick. I'm happy for him. AE is doing all he can and both Steve Smith and Rivera had nice things to sayaboutArmanti. Things are looking better.

Interesting idea about Cadet at the end of this piece.

You go, TC! I wish I could have been the one giving you that HUG! Miss ya!

This article had some good things to say about Armanti's performance Friday. I wasn't able to watch, but I have it DVR'd… I'm a little more encouraged by some of the quotes in the article.

One thing none of you had mentioned is that Joe Adams really hasn't looked all that spectacular in the return game… he's had a couple drops and has looked skiddish out there. He had one nice return where he reversed field and picked up some yardage, but you're not doing that against a first team special teams unit. Armanti has an increased chance to stick if he continues to be sure-handed on returns.

  • Jamey

Tutu baffles me because the coaches seem fixated on him depspite poor play up to this point. Murphy is the #3 by a long shot in Carolina with Gettis still out. Armanti's chances are probably hanging around 25% of making the roster. I don't see him making an impact even if he makes the team.

Dexter Jackson is not going to play WR in the NFL.

DJ Smith and Travaris Cadet are the two gentlemen that will be putting the APPALACHIAN STATE name on TV's this season. Before Hunter's injury, I would have also included him in that list. Quick still has the opportunity, but is on a pretty bad team from what I can tell up to this point.

As much as I love Armanti Edwards and all that he has done for ASU, I agree that it is time to stop dwelling on his every move. I watch the games and whole-heartedly root for him to finally have that breakout play that makes the difference, but we all have to stop analyzing his every movement as though we know what his future holds. If he makes the Panthers roster, fantastic. If he does not, then I will remember his great times at ASU and hope some other opportunity presents itself.

  • Fleetwood App

Well said Jamey. My sentiments exactly.

I remember one time a couple years ago when I got to hang out with Coach Moore a little. We were talking football and I asked him who on the current App roster was the purest athlete. His answer? Travaris Cadet. Guess we're seeing that now. I couldn't be happier for him and my favorite App of all time, DJ Smith. Anybody heard how Kilgore is doing?

  • AppInExile

Jamey, that's basically what I was trying to say about AE. Thanks for clarifying in a positive, uplifting fashion.

Thunder: I did read the thread BEFORE I posted. But like every other NFL-related thread on here it veers horribly off-course and AE becomes the main topic of discussion. If AE is on such a crappy team with such crappy receivers, wouldn't it make sense that he would shine and perform instead of continuously being on the Bubble?

We can all agree that the luster of his reputation and what he accomplished wearing the black and gold will never diminish, regardless of what he does in the pros. But it's put up or shut up time for the Legend. Maybe he needs to be cut and go play for the Steelers. The uni's might help bring the mojo back.

  • Jamey

Let me just reiterate how proud I am that we now have ALL of these gentlemen signed to their respective NFL teams:

    Hunter – Denver

    Smith – Green Bay

    Edwards – Carolina

    Jackson – NY Jets

    Lynch – San Diego

    Presley – San Diego

    Quick – St. Louis

    Kilgore – San Francisco

    Legree – Chicago

There was time, not so long ago, that many of us could not name more than 1 ASU alumni that was on an NFL roster. The growth of this program and the talent of the players has grown to a level never not yet seen at ASU. We are all lucky to be a part of this chapter in ASU football history.
