Rio if his former bad habits and company he keeps are any indication he could be unprepared for game day. 28 is Ricky Fergerson….a true freshman walk-on who really impressed coaches in fall camp. He has break away speed.

Size, speed, and depth paying off. Remember, our D has only given up two scoring drives, both late in the game. There is a lot to feel good about from our performance today. We should be very competitive in our league.

Frustrating to watch. They have 14 points off a fumble return and a kick return. Brutal.
Blaylock has been getting abused all day. We need a bigger better safety to complement Sanders. We should put Bryant in now to get him some experience. At this point in the game, our number of scholarships is the difference.
25 more scholarships is showing. Only way we beat that is to play error free football and not give them anything for free. Didn't do that today at all.
Keep in mind ECU has 22 more scholarships. Regardless of the outcome I have been pleasantly surprised. Without the turnovers and special teams issues we would be in this game.
True midwest. I guess that is what I was trying to get at. We have been hampered by bad/missed calls but we have also put ourselves in bad situations. We could have and should have put up a better performance. Our ST didint help, thats for sure. I will say that if we come out next weekend like we did today, montana needs to watch out. Overall, we dont look too bad. Im glad our team looks fairly decent on both sides of the ball. Today might not be our day, but I think we will have more success this year than what we expected. The guys seem to be playing like they should…like a TEAM.

With the youth on this team I feel positive moving forward. There were some mistakes such as special teams breakdowns and fumbles. Oline played well. Keep in mind we have 415 yards of total offense on conference usa's poster boy. I still would contest the fumble from Jamal Jackson as he was down.

According to the broadcast Price was suspended for today's game.
I'm suprised we haven't seen any option pitches or mis directions. The o-line has done pretty well considering the opposition. Not great running lanes, but better than I expected really.
I will say the d-line got shut down. ECU qb had a world of time.
With all that said, take away the kick return TD, and the fumble recovery TD, and we held our own really well.
I think we showed a lot of good stuff today. This is nothing like the teams we've fielded the past couple of years. Defense only gave up 21 points, and 7 of those came on a 17yard drive, courtesy of our special teams. Just two late game TD drives. When's the last time we played that well against an FCS offense? And the Satterfield offense is all we expected. Can't wait 'till Saturday! See you all in Boone.

ECU didn't start moving the ball on our D until the 2nd half, when heat and depth come in to play.
App offense moved the ball well and showed flashes of the Satterfield led glory years.
We'll know what kind of a young team we really have next week against the Griz.

I see several potential stumbling blocks here–special teams, the continuing lack of discipline and clean plaly, especially in the secondary, and we miss some of the receivers from last year. Oddly, the big question mark going in (O line) now seems the least of our worries. And at the risk of incurring everyone's wrath, I think Jamal has yet to prove he's a winner.

Some of these posts are crazy to me. We are starting to turn the corner and are on our way back up. Of course we had penalties and mistakes. That is going to happen when you only have 12 seniors. Our young players are talented and will only get better with game experience. I can't wait for the Montana game next week.

We showed a lot of "good things" today. Even though we lost, I think we will get a lot of positive things from this game. This might be the best thing to happen to us…it keeps us from getting big headed…and it will motivate the team from here on out. Montana better watch out because we will be bringing it to them next week. Lets just hope our ST doesnt mess stuff up.
No point in bickering with UNCc fans. Not worth the time considering they don't have a football program. App is very young and did well today. Keep in mind when you start comparing lower level fbs schools and elite fcs schools it's a matter of depth. 22 additional scholarships make a difference. You take away Apps mistakes which are to be expected from a young team and its a different final score. Looking forward to next week against Montana and 30,000+ loud App State fans.
The only thing worse than the piss poor "gameday experience" they had today was the officiating. Laughable display of both. The Rock is 3x louder than dowdy was today.
Our D looked a little disorganized at times and our special teams need work, but we had solid line play on both sides of the ball and kept it close. We could've been leading at halftime and if our offense hadn't slowed down in the 3rd quarter our defense could have been a little fresher for the 4th. We'll be tough against FCS teams but we can't compete depth-wise with teams with 22 more scholarships. We just need to clean up some of the dumb penalties and not be on the ass-end of every bad call in the game and we'll be tough this year. Looking forward to it.

Big Dave, they did have about 1000 show up last night for their nationally ranked soccer team (which is a good program) who was playing another Top 20 soccer team. Yeah, it's not football, but UNCC will never have the fan support to match the TV market and Corporate Backing.
Back to the thread—Good game by the Mountaineers. Defense played solidly, offense looked good between the 20's. Obviously, we've got to work on special teams and our third down offense was not good enough to win today. Hate to see so many guys with cramps when we knew it would be hot. Next week is a big game, but I think we've got the team and play calling to make it happen.

First off, let me say that our fans stuck it out much longer than many of the ECU "faithful." Nice job from a loyal fan base that travels so well. I will also add that the Pirate fans around us in the stands today showed a LOT of class, regardless of the score.
Second, hats off to ECU for getting the win. In the 3rd quarter when it felt like neither team wanted to take control the Pirates stepped up and got the job done. The game hinged on a few key plays and ECU simply outlasted us, which brings me to my next point…
If you weren't at Dowdy-Ficklen today, you have no idea how much the weather and player conditioning factored into this game. The temp on the field was measured at 110 degrees, much hotter than '09. Over 60 fans were carried out and we had a fellow near us break out in convulsions from dehydration. I can't even imagine how it was for the players. Everyone was cramping, including JJ which hurt us tremendously. There were several key plays where he had open space to run and had to throw because of cramping. It was obvious to those of us in the stands. Throw in Lamb and Middleton and others having the same issues on D…and there you go.
Finally, today did confirm what many of us feared: we have a LOT of growing to do on the O-Line. JJ had great rhythm early, but it faded because he was being chased around for much of the game. I am worried about this, far more than any other area. If these guys grow into their roles and gel as a unit, App will be VERY fun to watch this year. JJ showed flashes of AE-esque brilliance running, Chisolm reminded me of K-Rich (before he went down with cramps) and our receivers are definitely ready for prime time.
Im gonna be honest here. Im an app grad/fan but a lot of yall do sound like a bunch of babies. Quit complaining about the refs. I saw the same game you did. Jackson fumbled the ball. It was out before his knee was down. There is no way they could overturn that. Yeah the pass interference call was bogus because the ball was 15 yds past the guy and out of bounds, but get over it. We lost by 3 tds! In a lot of ways some of these ecu fans are right. We have defended AE for 3 years even though he has looked terrible. We do wish that we were in conference usa. As far as the uncc fan goes, dude shut your face. Play a game before you start talking

Jsh, what I saw today convinced me that we have a team that can win a championship in our sub-division. What we both saw today was plenty of evidence that your team will struggle to compete in its own third rate conference of its sub-division. But enjoy your win. I doubt you'll have many to celebrate this season.
Still 93 degrees outside, and I live on the coast of NC. It's usually significantly hotter in Gville.
Overall, given the nasayers I have heard posting on appfan before the season began, i think our moutaineers did pretty damn good. 22 less scholarship takes it toll on hot days like this. Give me 22 more scholarship players and this game is much much closer. Hell, we outplayed them for over half the game.

It was like my MBA program. The worst students that went to work for a Fortune 500 company all ended up at a specific company – I'm not going to mention which one, but, it was common across the board with other programs as well.
Please, rag on the poor little FBS program all you want. I am sure that you were the bottom of the college bound barrel from your school.
That said – to the rest of my fellow App Fans – stop whining about the number of scholarships out of one side of your mouth and whining about moving up out of the other side.
We play to win the game (Dennis Green) period. Nothing else matters.

3 years ago, we had a 5 point game against ECU, at ECU, with a 3rd string freshman QB who now has Drew Brees singing his praises as a RB/WR/return specialist for the Saints.
When you have accomplished ANYTHING close to what our program has, then come here and start talking. We held a close game for 3 quarters today, just couldn't finish it. Having tons of friends who go to ECU, I know that they love having us come play because it's always fun and a good rivalry. I'm a girl, and there is absolutely nothing less attractive than a guy who acts like an insecure 12 year old little girl, just saying. I mean, REALLY!?! You're acting like a child on another team's blog. You might seriously need to reconsider your life and what is important to you if THIS is what makes you happy. I feel bad for you.

Seriously guys, I'll be pulling for yall from here out. Just had to return some of the smack I have heard from some of yall the last couple months. It was closer than the score indicated, if thats even possible. Our QBs 1st start leaves us all with concerns. Yall would finish about mid pack in CUSA with what yall got this year. Not sure why anybody at UNCC feels like they need to talk any smack about football. They're in for a major disappointment. Sure, lots of HS talent in Charlotte area but they'll continue to go to SC, Clemson, and Tennessee like they always have. The lower tier players will still go to Cheater Hill and their ugly little sisters in Raleigh. Good luck this season, hope this becomes an annual game. Just no more noon starts.
Wow, it was hot!!!! I left in the third quarter and on the radio it was mentioned there were 200 people treated by the EMS. I spent 49 months in Iraq and Afghanistan and I never encountered this heat plus humidity.

While I was disappointed in the outcome, it did not compare to the absolute beat down and humiliation in Blacksburg last year.
Got to get to FBS and I don't care where! Tired of playing 7 card stud with only 5 cards! Either we go up or quit playing up, particularly crap schools like ECU that win by attrition only! I doubt they'll win another game this year.
I've recovered from the heat today, spending the rest of the weekend at the beach house. A couple of days on the sandbar and plenty of cold liquid refreshment will play no small role in my recovery.
BTW, local news reported that over 300 fans were treated at the stadium for heat-related illness and over 50 were transported to the local hospital due to heart attacks and heat stroke.

We lost, period. Tired of hearing how many players we have. If we don't have enough players then don't play the games. Special teams were not good, we can't hold on to the ball and a football field of penalties, all that needs to get fixed. There is no such thing as a moral victory. We lost and I don't want to do that again next week. You don't get a trophy for participating around here.
The Weather Channel just did a seg on the hot conditions in Greenville today. EMS reported over 350 cases resulting from the heat. We are probably lucky it was not more!!
@yogi86 you seem to get it. Appalachian State will do well in FBS no matter what conference they are in because they have tradition and history within their recruiting territory.

As much as we lamented over Price's suspension, jones really stepped up and filled the gap. Not worries about our WRs next week.
What really hurts us is the suspension of Jamil Lott and jamal ware. Blaylock gets run over and lott's contribution could have been a big help today and next week. Now with Middleton likely out for a while our secondary is THIN. Someone is going to have to step up and play big against Montana next week.
Apparently wvu chanted something to the effect of "why don't you crash another plane" to Marshall at their game today. I can not thing of a more classless way to act. Even as much as App and Marshall used to hate each other I would hope that our fans would never stoop that low. That I awful.

What a load of nonsense. We had more total yards than ECU and anyone with two eyes can see that we were not overwhelmed by the Pirates. We made mistakes that cost us some great opportunities and ECU captilized as they should have. We made costly mistakes than cost us the game. It happens to teams every week. The important thing is that we are on the RIGHT track and overall we played very well! All this talk of extra scholarships, refs, we don't belong is ridiculous. We are a good team and played well today against another good team that capitalized on the mistakes we made.
Can't believe the UNCC fans acting stupid on this board. Trying playing a game before talking crap about anyone. Charlotte will be battling it out with UAB and Rice for perennial CUSA cellar-dweller.
I salute the Jerry Moore and the App fans the made the trip to the "Sweat Bowl." Great QB for App…the guy just made some incredible throws, and had epic scrambing ability. That guy will run wild in the SoCon.
You Mountaineers should be excited about your future, this year & next. Our defensive line & linebackers were supposed to be our strength & your young o-line made us look silly in the first half. I think the heat/humidity was the real factor in the second half as it slowed the dual threat ability of Jackson. I think you guys will compete for a championship and we will struggle to make a bowl game. I agree that your QB could start at many FBS schools. ECU respects your coach & school and I for one would like to see U in our conference. I love how App State fans support the program!

It would be wise for App to get on UNCC football schedule in a couple of years from now to show who has the stronger program to help with recruiting.
Thank you ECU fans fpr exceptional hospitality and sportsmanship at tailgate. We had a blast. We as a fan base did well to survive the heat, much better than the Pirate fan base which seemed to be suffering heat related injury much worse than those of us from the mountaintop. Possibly due to overhydration with the wrong supplements… As far as the game, we played a very good game, but we did not get beat, we lost today. The teams were in shape and their Certified AT's need props for keeping them hydrated and for the most part cramp free. I sat on the 45 in the middle of the Pirate Club today, there were 8 AppFans in the middle of the sea of purple. We were larger than life to them for 3 quarters. Their fans could not believe we were beating their team..Our team looked great, played great, we led in every major stat at that point with the exception of time of posession(they had us by a minute). We lost in 2 key statistics, which ironically we led as well. Turnovers, and penalty yards. Granted, some of those calls were home job calls it seemed, but we lost those categories. We are going to have a very successful season APPFAN FAMILY, we clean up those penalties and turnovers, we will make one hell of a run! GO APP!

+1 Russ. Just getting up in Wilson and my body is still drained after yesterdays heat. We had a great time yesterday @ tailgate and ECU fans were hospitable to us. I thought we outplayed ECU for much of the game. I stayed until 5min. left in the 4th. Regardless of previous comments, the officiating did have a huge impact on the outcome of this game, both directly and indirectly. The fumble call, whether correct or incorrect; was not handled properly on the field. The umpire appeared to spot the ball at the point of alleged fumble and judging by the reaction of players on both sides and other officials; I think he may have blown his whistle as he stayed at that spot even as the ECU player who "recovered" ran through our end zone. It went downhill from there. OH Well.
Note to Mr. Cobb and Mr. Peacock: You've got the best college football fans in the country who endured killer heat to cheer on our Apps. Please don't make us suffer through another Noon start time @ a venue south of the Mason Dixon Line this time of year. Think how much more safe,enjoyable and fan friendly this game would have been @ 7:30 Saturday evening. I understand about the TV $ but surely you can figure that out.

THE HEAT WAS BRUTAL! I served in the Middle East and I have NEVER felt heat like that in my life. People are questing our conditioning but I got to tell you, if our guys were not in shape they could have not survived the game in that $hit Hole.
NEGATIVES: 1) We lost to a team that we should not have. I doubt that they will have a winning season. 2) Third down conversions killed us. We have got to fix that part of the game. 3) We need to have something that all other teams appear to have. It is a thing called special teams. We have special cluster "F''s". But don't worry Coach Moore is going to fix that. From what I understand he has been working on that for five years now. Sooner or later he is bound to bumble on to something that will work! 4) Moore is still on the sideline.
POSITIVES: 1) We are very young and stooped! We can fix that. The talent is there and as the season goes on we will be a very good team. 2) The team was finally prepared to play a game. They knew what they wanted to do and they did it. 3) Oline was solid. We finally have the horses we need to grind out a game if we need to. When they gel…..watch out. 4) The play on the field was very smooth. We did not have a $hit load of delay of game penalties waiting for plays or defensive sets to come into the huddle. I think we actually had a game plan!
Many more positives than negatives but… we still lost a game we should have won. That hurts badly. But, the future is finally bright and the sky is the limit with this team. I am very excited about our assistant coaches and our young team. We gots allot to look forward to.
Overall, very pleased with the way we looked yesterday. Definitely some homer calls by the officials that resulted in 14 points but we also ran out of gas. Credit to ECU for citalizimg on our mistakes. I do agree that it was a closer game than the score indicates but ultimately still a mark in the L column. And holy crap it was hotter than 4 hells out there! I can't imagine being in pads on the field.
I'm encouraged by what I saw though and know that the Socon and the rest of fcs better watch out!

I stopped reading this blog when it turned into the same old "you suck…no YOU suck" back and forth it's been for the past two months.
We played okay, ECU played ok. Had we played as well as we could it would've been a close game. Refs didn't help but you can't blame a 60 minute ball game on officials.
Out of conference and out of division…learn something for next week and walk away with a paycheck. GO NEERS.

I was at the game and watched the recording later and it clearly showed your offensive and defensive lines were boys among men getting thrown around like rag dolls in the 2nd half. 1st time post. ECU fan that watched a great game in Greenville yesterday. Two good teams putting it all on the field for their programs. Both teams will have good seasons. Why are uncc fans on here talking smack? I forgot, they don't have a team or a board. App & ECU have proved it on the field. uncc has never seen the field. uncc is a joke its a community college. Go Apps! beat Montana! Hope you pull for us over SC!
I have never posted on an East Carolina board smack talk or otherwise. I was always under the impression that the rivalry with ecu was friendly but perhaps not so much. I suppose we watched two different games but I certainly did not come away with it with the perspective that uugtaz displays. On the other hand I also do not have the perception that ecu will not win another game. I don't think they will beat USC but we will see. I certainly hope that they do beat USC. It seems that uugtaz is beating his chest, yet then claims that this game was of no consequence. It's one or the other chief. If it is of no consequence stop beating your chest. If it is worth beating your chest over, then the game meant something to you. Can't have it both ways. The game was far closer than the scoreboard indicated.
