In a miserably hot environment, App State played three quarters great but wilted late in a 35-13 loss at East Carolina. It was the fifth anniversary of the All Time Upset at Michigan. Since then, App is 0-5 against FBS teams, losing twice to ECU and once each to Florida, Virginia Tech and LSU.
WORRY STAT, OFFENSE – 32 rushing attempts.
The Satterfield mojo was evident from the start, particularly with a no-huddle offense that really pushed the tempo at times. Jamal Jackson was productive passing (300 yards on 23 of 40 passing) but just couldn’t move the ball with his feet, running seven times for just 34 yards. He’s gonna have to be more daring for the spread to click. Only three other Apps ran the ball, Steven Miller (14 attempts for 47 yards), Rod Chisholm (9 for 37) and Ricky Fergerson (2 for 3).
BE HAPPY STAT, OFFENSE – 8 Apps with a catch
Jackson spread his 23 completions around. Tony Washington was his favorite target (102 yards on 7 catches), with Andrew Peacock (77 on 5) and Malachi Jones (5 for 69) getting some love. Simms McElfresh caught two, and four others one. Nice to see some depth.
WORRY STAT, DEFENSE – Cramps strike back
Karma, we respect thee. The heat took out more than one App defender. In the past conditioning was never questioned – the limps were on the other legs back when App played ECU in ’09 – and we doubt there will be any Greenville climate repeats this year. Plus, more than 300 people “needed some sort of treatment because of heat-related problems.” So this is a minor complaint.
BE HAPPY STAT, DEFENSE – Just 192 through 3
Through most of three quarters, ECU gained only 192 yards of offense. It barely cranked out four yards a play. That D wilted during the Pirates’ final three drives, when they went for 198 yards and an 8.25 snap average. In short, after one game, we’re hyped for some outstanding defense this season.
WORRY STAT, HONORABLE MENTION – 11 penalties
We don’t normally whine about refs. That said, App State was flagged 11 times for 100 yards, while just two thrown at ECU (25 yards). App was called for multiple pass interferences and holding.
BE HAPPY STAT, HONORABLE MENTION – 45.2 punt average
Sam Martin punted six times. Two landed behind the 20. One was a touchback. The longest went 53 yards.
Your turn. What has ya worried? What has ya happy?
I wouldn't call the rushing a worry stat. Miller is just not going to be effective against a defense like we played today unless he is used in the flats/space.
The fact that Chisholm went down and was running well until then is a huge positive.
The rushing game was far better than I thought it would be.
I am very concerned (as usual) with special teams and penalties. Seems these things NEVER get better for ASU football.
Punt and kick return coverage issues brought back bad memories from several seasons ago.
We looked GREAT through most of the game. We looked like the better team on the field for first half if not the first three quarters. Turn-overs in a game like this are never good but the thing I worry most about is, once again, our special teams play.
And Jamal is not AE, Satterfield has already stated that he will run less.
1. App has probably 9 starters who could start at ECU right now. None are on special teams. This looked like the good old days when we played Wake. The biggest difference was depth. Like the man said, it was 14-13 with no scoring drive over 19 yards with 2 minutes left in the 3rd.
2. As as a spectator from the couch, all penalties on App and the Jackson fumble were the right call. ECU got away with murder, though.
3. I was very happy with the defense. The LB's are as awesome as advertized. But we get hurt when Blallock is on the field. He was burned for two TD's.
4. I love the new look offense. The O line was awesome most of the game and we have as good of a stable or WR's have we have ever had.
5. Jackson looks comfortable and hard to take down, but I would feel a lot better if he hadn't over thrown so many people in the 2nd half.
6. Despite the penalties, I would not call this undisiplined. They were the result of either young starters (#44 had 3) or trying to guard faster and bigger guys down field. The late hit hurt, but those happen. Hell, Jackson was hit late 7 or 8 times. Just wasn't called.
7. My last comment is my most worriesome thought. Chisolm and Middleton looked awesome. Are they out for the season? That would be the only thing that would make this trip to Greenville seem like a tragedy.
I'm not worried about running the ball 32 times at all. We ran the ball more in the second half…after half the crowd had left and our guys were cramping in the most miserable heat I can remember. I think we were intentionally trying to shorten the game and keep our defense off the field. We just ran out of gas and I think our coaches knew our players were feeling it at halftime. Therefore we tried to keep the clock rolling.
The biggest worry I saw was our offense struggled to finish. We moved the ball up and down the field, but couldn't put points on the board.
Honestly we had a real chance yesterday! We had two very unlucky plays go against us. The Jamal fumble returned for a TD (cost us 7 points and the ball at midfield) and the kickoff return for a TD. The punt return to our 18 that set up their second TD was bad as well. Our special teams really cost us. Those are the type of plays that have to go your way when you are the underdog and not only did those go against us, we didn't get any to go for us.
Officiating was awful!! That is what happens when you go to an FBS conference team and use their officials. It was as if they were their to protect their team and league from getting embarrassed by us…and I normally don't say anything about officiating either. The second penalty on ECU came way late after the game had been decided, otherwise they had one holding call for the entire game. That was BS!
The kickoff return for a TD after we made it a one pint game was huge. With the new rules this season, you kick from the 35. It guarantees a touchback every time. Why even tempt fate? We all know our special teams coverage is suspect. The rules actually help that weakness. Yet our coaches decide to kick it short….I'm stil scratching my head on that one. But I was pleased with our effort and fight. I just hope Middleton and Chisolm are ok. GO APPS!
Wo's : Continue to have special team issues …Why can't we cover kicks and punts ?
Surprised conditioning favored the bad guys…what is up with that ?
Our spread offense is very poor in short yardage
situations …always has been.
Too many penalities…
Overall a good job to build on…EC is a step up and their coaching staff knows JM and Scott well.
Kidd Brewer,
Kicking from the 35 allows more touchbacks by NCAA standards. These now come out to the 25 as opposed to the 20.
The way teams view it (I saw this trend a lot Saturday while watching other games) is to kick it high and short and give the coverage team who now has to run 5 fewer yards the chance to tackle someone inside the 25.
As you outlined it is a risk, and considering its only 5 yards added to the touchback, just kick it out into the endzone.
Put this one behind us, get ready for a good Montana team
When is the last time we've gone this long without some serious rants about play calling?
Jackson looked like a leader. I'm already pumped about Montana. There are 41 Saturdays a year with no App football. I'm going to try not to complain too much anymore about the 11 that we are guaranteed to have.
I was very concerned about our young offense and defensive lines. Football is won in the trenches and they performed well. We will be looking forward to improvement on both sides of the ball.
Overall, I was very pleased with the performance Saturday. I didn't expect a win going in, and I legitimately thought we had an excellent chance to win by the time the half rolled around. At that point, ECU had only EARNED one touchdown in that time, and I was very aware that we had been shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and turnovers.
The offense looked great, and the defense looked great. I attended the game in person, and I can say from first hand experience that I have never felt a hotter game-day environment. Kudos to ALL the players from both teams. Hell, I could barely survive four quarters SITTING in the stands.
In conclusion, I can't wait for the rest of the season. 4th NC, here we come!
BE HAPPY
1) Game planning was good. We had one
2) OL play was solid. With these young guys it will get better as the season goes on. We finally have the MEAT to grind out drives
3) Guts….anyone that can play in that heat is a stud!
4) Defense looked solid with the exception of a couple of plays.
5) Youth and plenty of it. Are all of these guys shaving yet?
6) Position coaching. The players used good technique .They looked confident. We did not appear to be out classed at any position on the field.
7) Talent and plenty of it at all positions. The bodies are there It is how we use them that will make the difference this season.
8) JJ looked like AE on several plays. He took some shots and shook it off. The MAN has some guts!
9) FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT.
WORRIES
1) Injuries… if we lose #8 it is going to hurt and in a bad way
2) Our special teams continue to suck year after year after year after year. No improvement over the last five years.
3) Jerry Moore is still on the sidelines.
yosef82 dittos to everything you said….. est #3 in the worries section
Chisholm is out 4-6 weeks after surgery on his broken hand..
Middleton is still being evaluated
I feel really bad for Chisholm. Hopefully he gets back quickly and tears it up late in the year and in the playoffs.
Worries:
1. Not special teams, just kick coverage, though place kicking and punting are fine
1A. Depth – We have 5 guys who are out for Saturday already (that I know of) – 3 suspended and 2 serious injuries . . . there could be more. This worries me.
Jerry Moore teams are almost always horrible on special teams. Still like to see more team discipline.
However, I wouldn't worry much about yesterday's loss. As hot as it was, an extra 22 players matters. Montana will tell us something.
Shake it off and move on.
just checked middleton's twitter…….seems to not be good. he's in surgery right now, from the looks of what hes saying he could be out a long time also.
loss of chisolm hurts. love millers cutback and speed, but it was nice to have chisholm as the bruiser if we needed it. now we have two undersized RBs in miller and the walk on with no name on his uniform. (major FCS moment watching the game yesterday)
Defense was great even with Blalock and his obvious lack of talent, speed, etc. Two horrendous offensive series 3 and outs, back to back were just awful and doomed a tired defense. Not sure what the thinking was but consecutive attempts to run up the gut, when the short passing game was unstoppable makes you scratch your head. Was Jerry overruling Scott and going conservative? Anyway, lots to build on. Special teams have got to improve drastically. O-Line played well but the heavies were struggling in the 4th. Hope they can recover by next week! Go Apps!
I think this is one of the best games App has played against an FBS foe since Michigan. My theory about the officals is that they are not the normal C-USA officials. Some of them were called up to the NFL because of the strike. What we have are High School Officials in their place.
We need a tight end who is a threat to catch a pass
Better speed and tacklers on special teams.
The noon starting time in Eastern North Carolina on the first day of September should be criminal.
Happy Stat: O line adn our overall play. Thier depth due number of scholorships caught us in the end, along with the heat.
Worry stat: Special Teams, again. Also injuries if as bad as portayed here.
Excuses…. Don't play us anymore if you can't stop crying!!
yosef 82 you are delusional were you at the game? I saw a different game than you did.

yosef 82 you are delusional were you at the game? I saw a different game than you did.
Yes I most definitely was. I know you weren't because your CANDY A$$ would have melted in that heat.
By the by… I don't see anyone on here crying. if we played these chumps in November we would kick their butts. But, EZU won and they deserved to get the W. I doubt they have a winning season but good luck to them. They are going to need it with Wiley on the staff!
Jackson looked like a real leader out there, cool and calm under pressure, and he displayed great pocket presence and an ability to avoid the sack. I thought he was clearly the best QB on the field.
The refs were from Farmville, NC
What happened to the Good, Bad and the Ugly.
OK The "Good": ASU's passing attack rolled up 300 yards and the ground game moved the ball sometimes at will, and you could tell Satterfield was in command of the play calling. The defense was much stouter than I thought.. This looks like a new team….
The Bad: The refs, seems to me its ok for the ECU players too hold the ASU defensive line but if a ASU player does it, then bam a penalty. The phamtom fumble by our beloved JJ….I was in front of it and his knee was down, looks like the camera even missed it according to the blind Conference UAS refs they ought to be ashamed, costly game changing event.
JJ looked as cool as the other other side of the pillow for the whole game…Gentlemen we have us a QB…
The Ugly: ASU Special Team gets this hands down, they were almost as bad as the weather who comes in second to ASU Special Teams play……Next time Coach Moore please kick it out of bounds…
On to Montana….
Dont worry about UGGTAZ his curb stomping by teams with 85 scholarships begins in about 5 days and 7 hours….They are in for a long season. If little ole ASU can rack up 425 yards of offense on ECU what do you think is going to happen when you face USC and UNC and Houston, and Southern Miss, the list is too long to type.
I agre with most everything already expressed. Refs did make some bad calls. The fumble for a touchdown was questionable, but with the pile of players there was no way to know for sure. I think even the guy who picked it up and scored hesitated expecting a whistle. On the long punt return, the replay on tv was showing a view over a refs shoulder, there was an obvious block in the back right in front of the ref that sprung the return man, not called of course. Overall, I’m excited for the season. Both lines played well. Where have we been hiding Dufort, the guty towered over most of the other lineman.
I was at the game and can honestly say that was the hottest I have ever been at a sporting event. With that said, i agree with most everything said, but would add that the defensive backs need to learn to TURN AROUND and find the ball! Very seldom did they ever make a good play on the ball. Troy Saunders did have a good game but the others, wow. You cannot expect toake a pick pr even a good defense of the ball when you do not know where the ball is. 21 was terrible! Jamal had a very good game and seemed in control the whole game. Very poised under pressure. O line did a good job as well. Special teams better improve tremendously or they will cost us some games. As for the short kick off, we were kicking into the wind at that point as could be seen by looking at the flags. Also, there were 2 blocks in the back on that play. Still terrible kick coverage.
I still think Jamal has yet to prove himself as a winner–getting it done under adverse conditions to help the team win. I like him, he throws a nice pass, but missed too many clutch throws yesterday for my taste. Jury is still out.
Secondary? What else is new? Penalties? Ditto. For some strange reason, ASU teams of late cannot play clean or with discipline. Coaching problem. And I won't mention the suspensions.
O line looked better than I thought it would. Worried about the running game, though. Backs are SMALL (anyone check out the W&M v. Maryland game for comparison with a CAA school)?
Special teams. Please. Just turn on the recorder from last season, "We need better special teams play. We need better special teams play. We need…."
Receivers: C+. Liked Jones, Jury's still out on Washington, too. Need a tight end.
Bottom line: We hung in there for a while and then got hammered by a bigger, stronger, tougher team. And our record against the FBS remains intact.
Hope for better things next week.
My 2 cents after watching the game twice…
Jackson missed 4 passes to open receivers for 1st dn or better
Jackson played very well otherwise, including looking DB's off
3 Penalties particularly hurt
We tackled well and laid some wood on several! (except spec tms)
No trouble getting plays called
Both lines came to play
Team looked good. We r going to do very well if we stay healthy. It's good to see that we are BACK! Go App!!
Nay touches on a point that has bothered me for years with Jerry Moore teams. He refuses to fully utilize the power of the tight end position. This position is a weapon of mass destruction if effectively utilized. Just think of the talent of Ben Jorden, but he was underutilized his entire career.
You cannot stop a large and fast tight end with good hands. Maybe we don't have one…then shame on us for not recruiting one.
If the team stays healthy…not off to a good start on that one.
I agree with Naysayer, JJ is a good passer and seems to make good decisions but he missed a couple of big play passes. A bit more touch and we likely had at least one more score. Overall, though he had a good game.
Penalties did hurt. Last year, by the way, we only averaged 4 per game so yesterday was a departure from at least last year.
I thought our receivers played well. Jones had very good 1st half. No complaints with Washington as a receiver. He did make some questionable decisions as a returner.
We will face a Montana team that will likely try to wear us down with the run. Our line will need to play stout once again.
Recruiting tight ends with good hands is one of the most difficult tasks colleges confront. There just aren't that many coming out of the high school ranks. I think Satterfield likes to utilize the TE, I'm not sure we have one on the team at this point.
One of two things I can't believe anyone would have a negative thing to say is the performance of our wideouts. Had 8 guys catch passes. C+ is rough.
also, Midwest is still a dope.
My only concern is the injuries going into Montana.
Washington had over 100 yds receiving. What jury?
I think the TE issue will be resolved once Barrett Burns starts playing. Although he is probably being red-shirted this year
Gwalt,
You do know a tight end is not a wide receiver, right? My comment was a general one and most who understand the game of football would agree with me. My son is a great TE so I am especially appreciative of the position.
Just made it back to Greenville, SC watching the game on the DVR now. We looked pretty evenly matched in the first half but flat out got beat in the second. Hats off to ECU, they played the more complete game.
Hope we get to schedule you guys again soon.
Huge "THANK YOU!!!" to the Band of Distinction! I know you didn't get to do much of the show but that was ECU's call, not yours. You braved the brutal heat and we ALL appreciate you. Can't wait to see you in the home opener! GO APPS! SKIN THE GRIZZ
!
The guys played well saturday, on the road against more talent ans experience. they got no break from the turnovers or refs. i wish some of the folks on here ran their own lives as hard as the complain about everyone, if they did the could buy us some better facilities and staff that they constantly bash. these folks would be billionaires and we could have an osu experience in boone. i thought they looked prepared for a team of youngsters with seven new coaches. and you guys that are bashing our te position as unatheletic, keep that opinion when they breakout because it will be too late for me to hear you suck up. like you allways do.
Midwest,
We have an awesome tight end. 6-6, 225 lbs. Trevor Sawyer has great potential. He is from Asheville. First selected ECU, then came to us. He red-shirted last year because we had Ben Jordan. He would have been our starter, but…..He is academically ineligible for the season. If he can go to class and get himself together, he will help at tight-end for the next few years.
Correction: Sawyer red-shirted the 10-11 season. He did play some last year. He would have been a red-shirt sophomore this season.
Middie, you are a dope because you say things like "a Jerry Moore coached team is always…" followed by something negative with a false aura of perspective like your time either A) following App football predates Coach Moore's tenure (which it doesn't) or B) your time following Jerry Moore predates his tenure at App (which it doesn't).
#44 has hands like a deer and got three penalties.
You have to be concerned about our kick and punt coverage.
I am starting to think that the high school coach in Arkansas, who never punts and always kicks off on-sides, may be on to something. He uses 6-7 different on-sides kick off plays. Even if you don't recover the majority, you force your opponent to spend a ton of practice time preparing for them. That means all their "good hands" players will be busy practicing kick returns. By always going on 4th down, you take away the 3rd and long mentality. This would keep defenses off balance.
I know these ideas are radical and our coaching staff is anything but…..but the no huddle spread offense was radical a few years ago.
A team from a lower division with 22 less scholies put over 400 yards of offense on supposedly a solid CUSA defense. I would not be suprised to see USC put 600 on them next week. If not for terrible kick coverage – a tradition under Jerry Moore – and the fumble returned for a TD this game is a toss up. A defense from a lower division held their vaunted "air raid" offense to under 400 yards and Jackson was CLEARLY rhe best QB on the field. When you factor out the fumble, pick and several crucial ASU drive killing and ECU drive aiding penalties this game was ours for the taking. Even though we lost to a team that will do good to win 6 games – only because CUSA is so weak – a lot of good can be be taken from it. OL is vastly improved and the defense has the chance to be outstanding – if we can stop losing players top injury. Unfortunately our running backs now consist of a juco transfer senior with few carries, a converted linebacker, and freshman walk on. Looks like the red shirt comes off Holloway. The loss of Middleton is big. Hope Walker and some of the young kids can step in and get the job done.
Lastly, I hope those defended Jerry Moore for defending Chris Moore and those other coaches who should have been shown the door years ago at least has the guts to admit they were wrong. Sad thing is had Cobb not stepped in and forced the issue Jerry would still have the same bunch as last year minus Spier and maybe one other. Had that been the case we would have lost by 50 Saturday.
I was not very critical of this game except for special teams and a general lack of team discipline. My only point is that we never utilize the tight end position effectively. This is a true statement. I didn't say Jerry Moore was Satan, although his football IQ is only slightly above avg.
#29 all time in D I wins. Second among active coaches in D I wins.
(Sound of balls being busted)
Sounds slightly above average.
yosef 82 I am a season ticket holder for years and you are the one that probably couldn't handle the heat!!! I know your team couldn't!! As far as crying just scroll up and down this board and read what your folks are writing! Crying and giving excuses. Also it doesn't matter if we played in January we would win!!!!!
wah
UUGTAZ
Your team wins 4 games this year maybe 5. You ought be ashamed of yourself and that team you call FBS. Go troll the USC boards.
UUGTAZ,
IF Yosef 82 was the only one that couldn't handle the heat…your fans suck! The stadium was over half empty at the start of the 3rd quarter in a 14-10 football game.
We should not be tearing down ECU. They endured the heat. Their players didn't make the bad calls. I hope they go on to have a great season.
The question is…will we build on our positives and correct our negatives. We have to find a way to adjust better. I saw the same area of defense get exploited. We did a sad job on the shallow crossing routes after the wr's cleared the area. We never adjusted and never really got pressure on their first time starter. At least we blitzed in Michigan 5 years ago. That seems to be a novel concept now.
Good, not great…gwalt. You know it.
Stop blaming refs. We lost. Let's move on.
I will never blame the refs for a loss.. yes, bad calls were made! But we made too many mistakes to beat a team with 22 more scholarships and at least three times the funding we have!
We outplayed them most of the game, just made too many mistakes down the stretch that caused the game.
Move on to Montana, let ECU beat their chests, and hope they do well the rest of the season. They better they do, the better it makes us look. The score is not indicative of how the game actually went, and any one who watched the game knows that.
Yeah i don't understand talking trash about how bad ECU will get beat next week or how many games they will win.
I hope they win the rest of their games. If they are terrible, what does that say about App? That doesn't make any sense to me. Although, JJ is clearly better than Rio. It was Rio's first start so I'm sure he will improve, but JJ would start for ECU no question. I'm glad we were able to get him to Boone.
Anyway, we could have won the game, but made way too many mistakes…ECU made less and had better depth so they won. On to Montana.
ECU beat us on the field. Congratulations Pirates.
Next ECU game in Boone! They owe that to the Mountaineers!!!!
Every time you play in Greenville you get the same home cooking ,App flagged 11 times to EZU 2 and one of those 2 late in the game ,,did anyone watch the game ,what a bunch of crap, that crew should be suspended
Come on App fans your better than this, blaming the refs, blaming the heat. Your player's were not conditioned for that type of environment. You guys played one HELL of a football game, ECU came out slow and finished strong.
Off the ECU topic, but can we get some inside info on Montana? They had a more confusing offseason to follow than we did.
If one looked at the Rivals website for the teams that could possibily be on the same level if we went BCS, there is not a lot of hope of getting the "blue chippers" in the foreseeable future.
Actually ASU have been on par with some of them in recruiting. Troy & Middle Tennesse for the current 2013 process has one-two star person between them. In 2012 they had about .5 dozen three star players in total and none higher.
If we go BCS, there does not appear to be a projected uptick in the quality of players if Rivals is a barometer; rather, the positive side is more bodies with a potential for one or more of the individuals to have a break-out career.
Let us get the men's basketball program out of the Southern Conference. The conference has NEVER had an at-large team invited to the Big Dance.
Wow, it was sultry and just plain miserable at Greensville. I felt sorry for the players and band members. However, I still felt better than I did at Blacksburg last year!!!!!!

All i know is greenville is the armpit of the world
Okay, acknowledging and bowing to Gwalt's eloquence, I'll go for a B- on the receivers, though I still don't think Washington has yet lived up to the hype.
My big problem with Jamal was the interception after the scramble when we were still in the game. You can't make that kind of bad decision and expect to win.
One of the problems with the "reviewed" plays was that the TV coverage was so bad that the refs had relatively few angles to review. And the cameramen kept getting fooled by the fakes over and over. Really second-rate TV. If this is the sort of coverage C-USA gets, I don't think we're missing a whole lot. "SoCon Saturday" was that good.
Tony Washington made one hell of a catch when double teamed deep in pirates safety coverage if I am not mistaken
One area we need to improve upon is our third down conversion. We were only 4 of 15 in that department. I know folks complained last year about running up the middle on first down but it sure seemed we put ourselves in that same hole on Saturday.
It's hard to know how good our run game is based on one performance. However, it certainly wasn't stellar v. ECU. I'm sure the ECU factors into that. However, our backs produced long runs of 10 and 11. Aside from those runs, they average around 3 yards a carry. Now with Chisholm out for half the season, we may really struggle there. Seems we will have to lift the redshirt tag on the freshman back.
There were a lot of positives from the ECU game but the heat played such a role that it is difficult to really guage what this team has at the moment. We will certainly have our hands full this weekend v. Montana. They had an impressive offensive showing in the first game. I think it is for certain that their run game will test our d-line more than ECU's did.
…ECU defense factors into that…
(Wish there was an edit function)
I too hope ECU has a good season, them loosing does nothing for us.
I was very encouraged with what I saw Saturday. Everyting but the injuries and suspensions are fixable. Man I wish we had all our guys for Montana, I am concerned, Chisholm looked good and Doug was having a great game.
Had the penalties been reversed an ECU fan would have run onto the field and punch a ref. Wouldn't be the first time…
Despite the refs though we have plenty of chances to win this game. The two fumbles that killed drives and the poor special teams play made the difference. ECU held on the first 3 qtr and then the extra bodies took over. Half our team made their first start Saturday so it's easy to see why mistakes were made. Once they gel this bunch will be scary good.
We got beat plain and simple. we can't say we belong there and then come up with 50 excuses. We both played in the same heat, we both had the same refs. We both had the same number of players on the 2 deep. We accepted the invitation to play the game. If it is so unfair to play with less scholorships then don't play the game. We got beat by the better team. If they only win 5 games this year then we don't belong in that or any other FBS conference. Stop sounding like a bunch of little sissies. Notice I didn't say little girls because little girls wouldn't give so many excuses. we made a lot of bad mistakes and if we are going to be the team many of you say we already are then the boys have got a LOT of work to do this week. For a bunch of guys who seem to hate Carolina so much you sound just like them.
It looks like we could be a lot better than last year by seasons end but right now we have work to do. No excusses!! We lost. We lost to the better team. Adults realize that when you lose it is always to the better team. There are no explainations on a scoreboard.
Gene gene, that's really a good wrap-up of the game…can't add much more. I do have one question: we had a fair catch interference call on a punt later in the game. Was it? I did not see the fair catch signal and the stadium video board replay never showed any replays that were in anyway questionable. I really do question playing a football game in that kind of heat, it is borderline criminal!
I wonder sometimes why so many trolls and lurkers are on AppFan.com. Could it be that their own fan pages suck that badly?
Concerns:
1 Lack of depth. Everywhere really, but quickly a painfully obvious factor at RB and DB.
2 Youth and inexperience. Twelve of the 22 starters on the depth chart for ECU were freshmen or sophomores; 18 of the 22 second-teamers were. So, 30 of our first 44 have little to no experience. That goes to recruiting, which goes to level of play, which goes to number of scholarships.
3 Poor DB technique, inadequate DB speed. Had ECU's young QB not overthrown wide open receivers two or three times, the margin of loss would have been much greater.
4 Poor kick coverage. I agree with Midwest–that has been a negative hallmark of Moore's teams, as has poor overall DB play. There have been exceptions, yes, but those have been relatively few. However, these deficiencies haven't been limited to Moore; we weren't consistently great in either area under coaches who preceded Moore. I wish we could replicate the Sparky Woods era defensive performances and couple it with Satterfield's best offenses.
5 Turnovers. Maybe one wasn't a TO, maybe it was. If we don't drop the ball at all, there would have been no question, and chances are good we would have gone into half up 10-7, at worst, instead of down 14-10. Based on depth and the heat factor, ECU likely would still have won in the end, however.
6 Montana. They beat a pretty good USD team by 11; I believe the game was in Missoula. Pre-season, Sagarin ranked MT #1 in FCS, and would have had them favored by two over App in Boone. After their win and our loss, the predicted margin will likely be greater going into Saturday. By the way, ECU was favored over App by six based on Sagarin’s pre-season rankings.
Observations:
1 Jackson seemed better early than late. Part of that may have been his cramps, part may have been ECU defensive adjustments. Whatever the reason, his accuracy seemed to tail off in second half.
2 I’m not sure Jackson was so clearly the better QB Saturday. Early in the game, yes. But eventually, Johnson had two TD passes, one INT, whereas Jackson had no TDs, one INT and one fumble lost.
3 Again, why do we continue to confuse BCS with FBS? We’re pining to move to FBS. We have no remote thoughts of moving to a BCS league. And it appears very doubtful we’re even going to be in the FBS ranks anytime soon.
4 Some TV coverage is better than none at all. Poor camera work aside, I wish all our games were televised.
5 I didn't see any incorrect calls by the officials. Inconsistency in their calls, yes, but the calls they made seemed correct to me. Refs didn't beat us. Our mistakes, our lack of depth, our inadequate conditioning, and ECU's superiority in all three of those areas did.
Haha! Another proud loss for appy state. You got just got beat plain and simple. Game was much closer than it should have been. ECU finally woke up in the 4th Q and put you guys to bed. Appy showed again why they do not belong in the FBS. Hopefully now many of your fans will be satisfied to continue your Div-II status.
Well said bcoach. Line up and play the game. Lookin' forward to Montana.
"Yeah i don’t understand talking trash about how bad ECU will get beat next week or how many games they will win. I hope they win the rest of their games. If they are terrible, what does that say about App?"
Boonedocks its called reality. Why do you want to sugarcoat something just to make ASU "look" better? I think our kids did just fine, but the fact is ECU isn't a very good FBS team right now. They are obviously one of the better teams we will face this year? But they also have 22 more scholarships and playing at their place with their refs. We could have very easily won that game and if I was an ECU grad I'd be asking some serious questions.
Appywho,
You have no team, so you are irrelevant. Come back next year and I guess you will step up to Div-2. You are an embarrassment to your school and to any potential real football fans who might go there. Your envy of App State, though once flattering, has gotten tired. Go to bed and dream of your Campbell showdown.
You guys are giving Cryolina a run for their money in the crying and blaming department for why you lost..what gives? According to the overwhelming majority on here ECU wasn't even in the game. The way I see it, ECU ultimately beat you in every phase of the game…offense, defense and special teams. Sure you guys out gained them by 25 yards or so but that isn't points on the score board. They threw for touchdowns, ran for touchdowns, fumble recovery for 6 then ran one back on special teams. If you ask me if ECU was on their game like they were in the second half this game would have gotten even more out of control that it already did. Take your lick and move on, all these excuses make you seem very silly. You guys played a good game, don't taint what your team did by acting like a bunch of crybabies. Good Luck with the rest of your season, I see good things this year for ASU!
Plain and simple
quite crying about the refs
The Pirates were Bigger
The Pirates were Stronger
The Pirates were faster
The Pirates didn't falter with the heat
The Pirates did not even show you all their weapons
They were not going to show you the things USC, USM, and UNC will see
You are a good team and good luck in the SOCON but next time stay off our boards talking all that smack about Michigan and how you were going to whip us in Greenville? Then when you lose we hear about scholarships, refs, and the heat. When was the last time you won there? Was it the 60's or 70's
Your team was being man handled in the end. If there was one more quarter it would have really been ugly. Good luck for the rest of your season but face it we were the better team and you were out matched
You guys are giving Cryolina a run for their money in the crying and blaming department for why you lost..what gives?
LOL Because APP football fans are Cryolina basketball fans.
Is there another school in the Carolinas that gets more trolls than us? Seems like we're doing something right to get idiots to come by every day…
where the hell did you get ECU was bigger, faster, stronger than App? For 3 quaters you only had 192 yds while App had almost 350 yds. The fact is Apps starts were as good or better than ECU, we just simply ran out of bodies. If App had 22 more schlorships, App probably wins this game easily.
LOL "App probably wins this game easily", you're a funny girl
Man what is up with all the trolls. Football season is started and they are picking a "div 2" (their words not mine) to troll???
One thing is for certain … We will have more wins than highway 49 U this year and next year and so on …
I was actually impressed with our game play minus the penalties and turn overs. These are fixable and I am not so sure the penalties were called fairly. Penalties did not cost us the game. Special teams cost us the game. Once they ran the return back it was out of our hands. Mighty Mo changed.
Our D played well with all things considered and that makes me happy! There are but a few FCS offenses I will worry about this season. GaSo is one of them.
Our O needs to get to pay dirt. They moved the ball well but could not get the ball in the endzone. Our receivers looked really good. I have to disagree with Nay on this one. Hard to catch a ball when it is 3 feet higher than you can reach.
All in all I will not gripe about this game. I think we beat Montana if this same D shows up. That is if ECU is bad and made us look better than what we are. This Saturday we will know.
There is always home cooking. Even at APP. It is just part of the game. Although 2 to 10 is pretty questionable.
The heat was crazy and I was at LSU in 2008. I have to say it was really close to being that hot.
Good game to ECU they played 60 minutes and were better conditioned this year than in 09. However, I am worried that they made us look better than what we actually are. We play UGA next year and they will not make us look better than what we are! Bring on the griz!
One thing is for certain … We will have more wins than highway 49 U this year and next year and so on …
Good to know you all are thinking about us.
We lost. End of subject. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
Charlotte Trolls ( good nickname for them?) are here because they have nothing else to do but wait for another losing basketball season.
ECU fans get to tell us "I told you so"
(they really need a QB)
Focus on Montana………
Oh ya we are thinking about you NWA …
About the time we get you out of our head your idiot fan base decides to come to our board and begins to type. I know lots of fan bases lots … but by far to infinity and beyond the 9ers are the most idiotic and stupid of any.
You all make western fans look smart.
