Gameday – FCS powers collide

We dig the short busHyped! Hyped! Hyped! Hyped! The first home game of the season is here! And man oh man do these teams have a history – “The programs have played twice in the semifinal round of the playoffs, but never in the regular season. Both games came down to the wire, with the Griz winning on a Drew Miller-to-Jimmy Farris TD pass in OT in 2000 and again on a late TD pass from Andrew Selle to Jabin Sambrano in 2009.” Take any cool pics, please share. GiVE ‘EM HELL!

Game day baby. Swing by the short bus on river st and say hi. I will be the one wearing black and yellow. Seriously swing by and check out the view from the top of the bus.

  • Fleetwood App

Time to bring the pain men. Get it done. Go Apps.

  • 3-star

ECU is getting the silly slapped out of them by darth visor… This makes us look really bad…

  • AIG

3-Star, exactly right and it is not as close as the score would indicate 41-10

  • Phillip

Anyone know if the game is on tv?

  • AIG

Clemson has emptied their bench against Ball State leading 52 to 20 in the 4th. These lower end FBS programs are no different than FBS

  • Run DMC

What's the weather in Boone now? Will it be raining at kickoff?

  • mockenburd

    aig is a moron

  • AIG

Western Kentucky is playing Alabama on TV. This ought to be good.

  • AIG

ECU, Western Kentucky, and Bauld State are FBS. Can't wait until we get to that level! Top Tier Football

  • AIG

Oh wait a minute! We got snubbed by those powerhouses.

  • appgrad11

AIG you know ECU whipped us. That tier is still better. If Western Kentucy was in FCS they would 1 or 2 in the rankings

  • AIG

Gamecocks 48 ECU 10. Does the word rout come to mind? Wofford is playing Linclon. I'm pretty sure that is a high school. Oh no, another one of our sisters goes down in flames.,Austin Pee is getting no respect from Virginia Tech 42 to 7.

  • JD

    AIG is a class-less hack….and a moron. Go Apps!

  • sixtoes9134

Yeah, ECU didn't look good at all today. I am concerned we didn't get a true picture of how good we are up front, Montana – maybe be better than ECU on the OL

  • ASU09

Didn't think it was possible but someone is more annoying than Dr. Gonzo—-AIG

  • NewsMan

Anyone have an ESPN3 account I can use to watch the game?

  • AIG

    But we beat Michigan

  • sixtoes9134

ESPN 3 is tied to your ISP, it won't work if your ISP isn't an ESPN 3 affiliate.

  • AppInExile

    Hey, remember amigos?

The best defense against trolls is to IGNORE them. Let them go bother fans on other sites. Besides, how pathetic is a person if they spend time as a troll on fan sites like this one?

  • NewsMan

I know, I only get TWC Road Runner internet. I have DirecTV for my regular TV. I was just seeing if anyone would be kind enough to let me use their username and password for the game as I am stuck at work.

  • AppfanJared

Walking to the stadium now. It's go time!

    AAAAPPPPPPP!!!

  • docsny

just coughed up $30 for pay for view (down here in Alabame…WE better beat these Montana boys!!! I will be looking for jrod, geno, drock and clayton….go apps

  • AppUSMC

I'm at the game. The weather is overcast and 63. Not too bad. Pretty dry for now and radar looks good. Attendance will most likely be low. There's tons of empty parking spots.

  • A.Freeman

    just lost wide screen?

  • AppUSMC

Never mind. It's packed. The Griz ran on to the field with a pirate flag.

  • ukappfan

espn feed sucks. it goes in and out. The d looks good, then has a brain fart. looking good keep it up!!

  • Apple+At+Chin

Agreed UK…espn was horrible. Granted, it's doing alright for now. Let's hope the good feed continues. *keeps fingers crossed*

    And INTERCEPTION!!!! WOOHHHOOO!!

  • Rick

can't even get to the pathetic espn3 feed. Watchespn or whatever is called, keeps crashing! Which ESPN wouldn't even try so we could at least watch it on goasu.com. It's not great, but at least it works!!

  • Apple+At+Chin

Ok, I spoke too soon…espn3 screws up again. Great job espn…Yall STINK!

  • Apple+At+Chin

Wow, this is absurb. I'm switching to goasu audio…at least it works. I've NEVER had issues with espn3 like I am tonight. Too bad there's not another feed that I can watch the game on.

  • App '93

    We're missing too many tackles!

  • AppInExile

Looks like montana's D is starting to tighten up

  • ukappfan

that moore guy is a big boy

  • Apple+At+Chin

Anyone else having "loading issues" when the feed is already being played? My feed keeps going out and it says there's an "error loading the page." I'll be watching the game just fine and then it just cuts out and says that it's having trouble loading. I hope goasu has a lot of games this year because if I have to keep watching app games on espn3, I'll probably be bald before year end.

  • Apple+At+Chin

I will say though, that from what I've been able to watch, it's been a pretty good game. Very enjoyable. Wish I could be at The Rock! Hope all of you guys that are attending are making a ton of noise! Go App!!

  • ukappfan

the play calling is back to crap run run run punt

  • App '93

We're lucky to be in this game, been outplayed so far.

  • ukappfan

i think we played really well in the first quarter, but i mean what happend to the offense? They are back to the same crap. Throw the ball.

  • Jland

I think there is some conditioning issues. The boys looked tired in the second quarter and the kickers were getting cramps… That isn't good.

  • ukappfan

306-179 yards in the first half for Montana and App….

  • App '93

We need to make some changes for the 2nd half or we may get blown out.

  • ukappfan

on a side note, El Cid is up on GaSouthern 20-14 in the 4th

  • Loveithere

Would love to know how many yards they have just on 3rd down

  • ukappfan

ok they are too big, cant run between the tackles….so stop trying…

  • App '93

Terrible 4th down play call! Reminds me too much of last year.

  • ukappfan

tell me about it. the CB are 5 yrds off the WR. Throw a quick screen.

  • Jland

Okay so not trying to create an echo in here, but seriously? Up the middle? Did Satterfield forget his play book at home?

  • ukappfan

I thought we brought Satterfield in to shake up the playbook, not keep the bland crap.

  • ukappfan

    wow coastal beat Furman…..

  • Rob in zootown

    Greatt game Go Griz!

  • App '93

Pitiful offensive series. What has happened to the play calling, and why are we putting in so many freshman in such a tight game?

  • ukappfan

THANK YOU! THROW THE BALL!!! THE GRIZZ ARE TO GOOD TO RUN UP THE MIDDLE ON!!!

  • ukappfan

    number 14 is a beast

  • App '93

He is a beast! Real excited about his future.

  • KEITH

    ESPN3 IS HORRIBLE

  • ukappfan

wow that Moore kid for Montana reminds me of a really big Ceaser from Nova. He is good.

  • App '93

Don't understand how our D can make some many plays, then fall completely asleep!

  • loveithere

Not at the game listening on radio, and following on espn game cast but seems like we are struggling in the areas we are thinnest. Secondary and RB. No inside run game at all

  • ukappfan

loveithere, we cant run inside because Montana is big and can move. They are good inside. We started throwing and have opened it up a bit.

  • loveithere

I will buy that but without Chisolm we really don't have a runner to go up in there. Seems like we are using Jamal as our power back which is dangerous

  • nomadb

Just want to say stfu ukappfan. Good thing you're not calling the plays.

  • ukappfan

really..stfu. i am glad i am not the play caller also. but Montana is good and big. For us to run up the middle three times when we cant go anywhere is dumb. When we pass, we can move the ball. I understand we have to keep them honest. so why dont you stfu.

  • jambo

here we go……one final stand apps D!

  • HOGAN

1:06 to go, 35-27 app and easily 5-7 thousand less people in the stadium.

  • loveithere

Are the goal posts coming down?!?!?!? Great team win guys! Now don't let El CID sneak up on us

  • JD

A very nice FCS win for Apps.

  • Rufus

Awesome win for us and the stink loses to el CID. Awesome night!

  • AppInExile

Glad my reverse mojo worked! I'm terrible at making predictions, glad the reverse juju worked once again

  • ukappfan

Big day in the socon. El Cit beats GaSouthern, Furman gets beat by coastal, Chattanooga gets beat and a good win for App. Hats off the Montana, they are a good team.

  • Jland

Great game no matter my complaints… Griz are class acts… Can't wait to beat them in the national championship game soon…

  • mockenburd

Say what you want…..Miller was a little beast!… a lot of heart to keep pushing.

  • JD

what was the the announced attendance?

  • nomadb

    Hey ukappfan….

that was harsh on my part…..appologies.

All I'm saying is this isn't the same coaching staff we had last year and you need to trust them a little bit. What they were doing wasn't blind faith…they clearly saw that the run was there…it's not always going to be a 10 yarder. I think it was clear on that last drive that our O line scheme COULD handle them and we COULD run up the middle. Both of Miller's rushing TD's came off of the guard

Anyway….no hard feelings….I was a little riled up and had a few beers and I just get sick of the bitching on this site sometimes…..ultimately, we want the same thing to happen.

    Go App!

  • AppfanJared

Announced attendance was up over 38,000.

  • AppfanJared

Nevermind. My source lied. It was 30,000

  • ukappfan

    Hey nomad,

No hard feelings. I was riled up also and had some bourbon to help with the game haha. I understand what you are saying and I know I am not a coach, just as a fan its frustrating to see the same stuff with a three and out. They were right and the run opened up. It just seemed to me that once they started to throw the ball a bit, the running lanes opened up. I apologize also for my crap. I trust the coaching staff but just alcohol and frustration. I didnt mean the bitching, just venting. I was born and bred on App State footaball, and as a recent grad, will die an App State fan!

Great game and bring on next week!

  • AppInExile

I think we can all agree that the win was welcome tonight. Nice job by Montana to make it a nail-biter. Look at all of the issues they've faced in the off-season and they're still playing championship caliber football.

Tonight was a true test for App State. They stepped up and got the job done. The penalties tonight drove me crazy, but I suppose that's an area for improvement.

  • AIG

Very Nice Win tonight. Would love that level of competition and exposure each week. The Rock was LOUD!

App Grad in Greenwood, South Carolina

    aka AIG

  • AppOrange

I have no voice left, great game, the crowd was awesome!

  • (sigh)

#35 from Montana (Moore) was a beast. Great win against classy team.

  • Sprtsman1414

Will we ever learn how to go under center on 4 and 1?

  • Appthunder90

Someone tell aig, "but we beat Montana"

  • HOGAN

Great win for App, love a good close game. Encountered quite a few Montana fans and as advertised, were all class acts. Made a point to wish them luck and thank them for making the trip, even helped direct a few to the bar after the game. They've got a special player in #35, that's for sure. Really liked what I saw out of Price tonight. I think him and Jamal are going to have a big year!

  • scott

    Great win!

The crowd at The Rock really was quiet in the 2nd and 3rd Q's. Dom't understand how a quality football game and the home opener can bring such silence. Video was also poor on the big screen.

Moore is a beast for Montana. Great job ny our defense winning the turnover battle and nice job by Miller and the O-Line in the deciding quarter.

Should be an interesting match-up vsm The Citadel, but I think we will outgun them.

  • AppUSMC

App made the ESPN highlights. They showed the diving TD.

  • AppUSMC

App also made the play of the day at #6 for that hard hit on a kickoff return where we forced a fumble and recovered.

  • announced crowd was 30,700 something. Crowd got way loud toward the end. CVomplain all you want, one of the best fought game I have seen in YEARS!!! BAND, THANKS for being in the endzone stands!!! If you missed it, SORRY!!!!

  • yogi86

Good win overall. Offense is improving, but seems bland and disorganized in series. Several 3 and outs trying to run up the middle in the second half. We had them reeling 21-7 and instead of pouring it on got very conservative? Have to drop the hammer when they're on their heels like that. There were several situations when we were on defense and they had 3rd down and we looked panicked and unprepared. Don't know why we didn't call a timeout and regroup. We only used one TO the whole game?

  • AppInExile

    +1 yogi

We noticed the same thing while sitting in the stands at the ECU game. Too much time was spent looking at the sideline and at each other is what we struggled with last year.

Hopefully as the units gel this will improve. Losing veterans like Middleton hurts b/c they do such a good job making sure everyone's in position.

  • App Band

INCREDIBLE GAME! FABULOUS NIGHT! Jamal Jackson, you are truly "Mr. Ice Water in My Veins!" Defense was brutal! I'm seeing glimpses of the App State from our championship years and that's what I've been waiting for! GREAT NIGHT!!!!

    A few side notes:

*Cheerleaders and Dance Team: DO NOT TRY TO GET THE CROWD CHEEERING WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL! GOTTA BE QUIET!

*Huge shirtless male student to the right of me (mega-eeeeewww!) BELLOWING THE "F" WORD A BILLION TIMES….REALLY?!!?!?!

*My Band: Really glad they've put you in the endzone (still wish you were back behind the team, tho) but now the sound is lost almost entirely. Point those horn bells in one direction and alternate sides on tunes.

God: Thanks for the gorgeous double-rainbow! Perhaps a good omen for this season!

  • Giv'em He'

The announced attendance was a little more than 30,800. It was a great game and a fantastic atmosphere. The vast majority of fans stayed the whole game and really got energized in the fourth quarter. There were some moments when we looked lackluster and went 3 and out, when we had strong momentum handed to the offense by a great defensive stand. But, the fans hung in and the team really responded when they had to. Home field advantage was huge and this was proof positive that we need to schedule more night games in Boone!

  • Giv'em Hell App

Gotta keep an eye on that "word recognition" thing.

  • yosef82

The players and coaches still have not fully come together as a TEAM. But, I am amazed at how well they are playing at this point in their development. Super great game and atmosphere.

If you were at this game and did not enjoy the experience you need to become a curling fan. Everything was awesome. The University, the team and fans provided an experience that is uniquely APPALACHIAN. I was very proud of the fans in attendance as well as the play of the team. When those young boys finally gel watch out boys and girls, the sky is the limit. This type of game is why we write all of those checks, listen to all of that crap from the Georgia Southern red necks and travel to hell holes to watch our team get ripped off by homer officials. It was HUGE fun and I can't wait until next week.

Hats off to the coaching staff. Men you have done a hell of a job with our young players.

    GIVE'EM HELL!!!

  • Appy8

    Appinexile,

I don't think Middleton is considered a veteran. He's just a Soph. And I agree that his presence is missed, but from an athleticism and speed standpoint, not a leadership standpoint. He will get there, but one season doesn't automatically make you a field general. By his junior and senior seasons, he'll have the chance to be that, but not right now

  • Appthunder90

I would like to applaud yosef82's last post

  • Twitch

It seemed to me that many of the players have a new perspective this season. Many of the players were being personal in appreciating a lot of us in the stands after the game, rather than giving off the sense of entitlement I've thought has been hanging around for a couple years. They seemed to be more inspired, which will hopefully continue all season.

  • ASU 09

APP BAND- Hate to break it to you, but no one cares about the band. They need to be in the endzone instead of taking up room in the student section.

  • AppMan

AppBand do me a favor and impress upon the new director using purple flags is totally unacceptable.

ASU 09 you're about a dumb as the post holding up my mailbox. The band is as important to creating the game atmosphere and getting the crowd going as anything. I just wish they'd get rid of some the music and let the band play more. It's college football not the pay me pros.

  • The rock

It was great to see people on the sideline getting the team and crowd fired up. Nic cardwell's enthusiasm reminds me of coach Elliott. I think the passion on the coaching staff has been one of the important things we lacked the last few years.

  • mockenburd

09, you are a slobbering idiot and only have appreciation for your tailgate.

  • Saturday's attendance :

    UNC @ Wake – 29,526

    Montana @ ASU – 30,856

  • App Band

App Man: Totally agree with you about those purple flags! EWWW! Kevin Richardson is the brand new director…he doesn't yet understand our hatred for all things purple! I'll have a little friendly chat with him. He probably brought them with him from Northwestern U.

Thanks for your defense of the band to ASU "Who Cares" 90! I appreciate that!

  • ASU 09

Say what you want about me, but come to reality. No one comes to the game to hear the band. The only thing they are useful for are kickoffs. If the band was so important and great, everyone would stay in the stands during halftime. Instead, everyone bolts to get food, drinks and socialize.

  • yosef82

    ASU 09

    Son……..you are a TOOL!

The folks in my section look forward to the band's entrance as much as the teams.

Don't "F" WITH THE BAND!!!!!! You will pi$$ off people that you really do not want to. Take my word for it!

Now go home and play with your Tonka Trucks.

  • ASU 09

Yosef 82- You act like telling me to play with my Tonka Trucks is intimidating.

I'm stating facts that the majority of people who attend the games agree with. The random few who actually care about the band are coming out of the woodworks. I think the ones who are defending the band are the nerds who must have been a band member in middle school or high school.

  • Gwaltineer

I wasn't aware there was anyone who didn't like the band.

  • appthunder90

who in the hell doesnt like the band!? some snot nosed 09 grad? leave it to the "09 we so fine" crowd to try to ruin something that the rest of the world loves. I hate my generation sometimes. Man, I really would rather sit in the stands and hear cotton eyed joe than hi hi yikas or take your pick. give me a break. they played zeppelin at half times for crying out loud.

  • ASU 09

"O9 we so fine" Who in the heck has ever said anything that stupid about being the class of 09?

Maybe if the band actually sounded like zeppelin or any decent music at all, people would care. Or maybe if they didn't play the same music game after game, year after year. If y'all got out of your group of friends of 2-3 and socialized in big groups you would realize the general attitudes towards the "band of distinction"

  • AppInExile

    '09,

The band does matter…before the football team was known for winning rings and beating you-know-who, the BoD was known across the southeast for smoking bands from larger universities in competition after competition.

My first experience of Appalachian Football was in 1989. I was a junior in high school that year and came up for the weekend to visit my girlfriend. Growing up in VA Beach, I knew very little about App State.

We were headed to the game and the band was right in front of us, setting the cadence as they marched up Stadium Drive and into KBS. All of the fans around us walking up the hill were quiet and all you heard were drums beating and feet marching.

As I write this, the chills are going up and down my back remembering that on that cloudy September day I said to myself, "I've never experienced anything like this before. It's almost like marching into battle."

Many of us are quite proud of the BoD as well as our sports teams. Give respect where it has been earned.
