Next: A chance to beat a winner

My Army training tells me that this is going to be a hot mission.App State heads to Lil Sammy for only the second SoCon – and third overall – road game of the season. The dogs are coming off a win over The Citadel, and have one loss on the season, to Stink. The good guys have a three-game win streak going on. Here are four downs.

First Down. You are what you beat.
App State has yet to beat a team with a winning record. Montana is currently an even 3-3, while the last three victories came against two-win teams. Even odder, not one of the six teams App State has played is over .500. ECU and The Citadel are both an even 3-3. Lil Sammy is currently 5-1, its best start to a season since 1992.

Second Down. Dog eat dog world.
Lil Sammy, though, has played a pretty soft schedule. The only quality(?) win was in the season opener over a Furman team now 2-4. The rest of the wins came against West Alabama (DII), winless Gardner-Webb (0-5), the ‘Whee (self-explanatory), and The Citadel (which has lost three straight). The dogs did have a 10-7 lead against The Stink, but eventually got pounded 35-16.

Third Down. Injuries taking toll.
Two more Mountaineer starters are gone for awhile. Deuce Robinson, a sophomore who starts at bandit on defense, will miss two to five weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. O-lineman Alex Acey is out six to eight weeks with right foot injury. Andrew Peacock was actually doubtful for the Elon game due to a hip injury.

Fourth Down. Another one wants App to bite their dust.
For the second straight week, App State plays a foe it’s perfect against in SoCon play. Lil Sammy joined the league in 2008, and is a big 0-fer-4 against the Mountaineers, the only team it has yet to beat. That’s right, Lil Sammy owns wins against Wofford (’09), Stiink (’09), ‘Nooga (’08), Swag (’11) and the rest of the conference not located in Boone.

Let's keep that record against Samford. Here's to a 5-0 start against the dogs! I predict that Price will be back to old form, racking up the yardage again. I also expect that Steven Miller will go over 80 yards. JJ will struggle early like the often does, but when he hits his rhythm, watch out, dogs.

    Beat Sammy.

DJ mentioned that Acey injury was a broken foot on Around the Mtn today. And that Deuce may only miss 2 weeks, at this point that is considered good news.

Our offense needs to go for bigger plays early, more screens should help the rush early in the game, as Elon had guys in the backfield the whole first half on running plays.

App needs to come out and be agressive on both sides of the ball and not as vanilla as they were in the first quarter against Swag. Selective blitzes on defense would be a good start….keep them guessing unstead of just reacting to what the offense does.
