Apps beat Deacs

In a baseball game postponed one day because of snow, the Mountaineers topped the Deacons 10-1 on Wednesday night in a nonconference game at Wake Forest Baseball Park, hours before another winter storm was due to hit.

Appalachian’s Jaylin Davis, a graduate of Northeast Guilford, homered twice, finishing with three RBIs and two runs. Conner Leonard, a graduate of Reagan, got the Mountaineers (3-3) on the board with an RBI single in the fourth and scored a run late.

Despite temperatures in the 40s, Leonard said the Mountaineers relished the chance to get outside and play, after being forced indoors for the majority of the past few weeks.

“We go to school in the mountains, what do we expect? It’s going to be cold,” he said. “We haven’t seen the field since before the tournament at N.C. State. This feels good out here.”

The Mountaineers have yet to play a game in Boone. The first scheduled appearance at home is March 13. It’s a three-game series with Texas State, followed by a three-game series at home against UL Monroe the following weekend. After a trip to UNC, the team hosts Wake Forest March 25.
