Don't Miss

Season ends

fox_jimThe first year of the Jim Fox era ends with three straight wins and a 12-17 record, 9-11 in the Sun Belt.

Given where the program’s been and the challenges greeting a rookie head coach, not too shabby.

“I’m obviously very happy with the way we finished the year,” said Jim Fox, whose Mountaineers wound up 12-17 overall and 9-11 in Sun Belt Conference games in his first year as coach.

“I think this game was a microcosm of our year. We struggled to score a little bit, but we just kept battling. We kept battling every possession.”

In the league, App State finished in sixth place. If not for NCAA sanctions, the team would have made the 8-team Sun Belt tourney field.

“Coach talked about how we couldn’t make the tournament so we needed to play every game as if it was our last,” said junior guard Frank Eaves, the season’s top scorer for the Mountaineers who capped things off with a game-high 21 points. “The team did a great job of staying focused.”

The regular season league champion is Georgia State, at 15-5. Second place is … /deep sigh ….
